Training in Godliness
The Huron & Erie Council is pleased to be inviting you to come and participate in the fantastic Conference 27. We have been working together as a council to bring you a very rewarding experience with a great variety of Speakers, Worship and Workshops. The workshops are geared to educate and inspire both Counsellor and his spouse. Conference 27 is going to be held in Woodstock Ontario at the newly built Maranatha CRC.
We will be starting our Conference off with Praise and Worship along with the Band “Audience of One”. Our Key Note Speaker Jeff Vandermeer from Simcoe Ontario will start our day with some inspirational words.
So come out and reunite with fellow counsellors and have fun and fellowship with each other at this great event.
Key Note Speaker Jeff Vandermeer
Bio: Jeff Vandermeer is the Pastor at Immanuel CRC in Simcoe Ontario, with Cadets having a special place in his heart. One of the reasons for his love for Cadets is because it was as a Cadet Counselor that this former concrete contractor found a place in the church long before the pastorate was even in the picture. Jeff grew up out west, landed in Stratford Ontario and for four years, God used his experience as a Cadet Counselor to form and shape him more and more into the person God had created him to be. Jeff is married, has two young children of his own, and is very grateful for what the Cadet program has given him personally. It is because of this experience, and the "Training in Godliness" that he received in his years as a Cadet Counselor that he is very excited to come and lead us in a day of reflecting on what "Training in Godliness" really means.
Breakout session: Play to Your Strengths! Do you ever get tired of suggestions to help make you a better Cadet Counselor that honestly... don't? As a Cadet counselor, do you ever have activities that simply drain you? Activities that inspire you? If I asked you which activities inspire you, could you tell me? Have you spent a lot of time trying to "fix" those areas of your life as a Cadet Counselor that you see are weaknesses... with little success? You see, I think one of the main issues that most of us face as Cadet Counselors is that we are trying to be someone who we are not, someone different then whom God created us to be, someone who we think we should be! In fact, I believe that in life, work, family, and as a Cadet Counselor - God has specifically gifted you in exactly the way he wanted to! In this session, we are going to try find some freedom to be more and more of the people who God has created us to be by seeing that we all have unique gifts, strengths and talents in a very practical way! Tired of focusing on your weaknesses? Together, lets learn how to manage around them and begin playing to your strengths!
Preview: Training in Godliness. John Ortberg, in his book The Life You've Always Wanted says this: "There is an immense difference between training to do something and trying to do something." How many of us as Cadet Counselors have tried real hard to be a good Cadet counselor, with less than stellar results? I know I have. How many of us feel guilty because we don't do things as well as other counselors? How many of us have a hunger to actually make a difference in a boy’s life, yet feel very inadequate when the rubber hits the road? How many of us are tired of trying really hard to be "that guy", whoever that guy is? On November 12, we all have an opportunity to stop trying so hard, and to embrace the fact that God has already given you all you need to be the counselor that he has called you to be. Skills may need to be honed. Abilities may need to be uncovered. Talents unearthed... That is why we are training in Godliness! Training assumes that the goal is yet to be met. Training has a definite beginning and ending date, but the bulk of the time is spent in the field, learning as we go. Training is different for everyone, at different speeds... We are Cadet Counselors in Training. On November 12, we will all have an opportunity to truly see that all of us have been created in exactly the way God wanted, and what that means for each of us... to see that the best thing we can do is receive our talents and abilities with thanksgiving as gifts from God and then train ourselves how to use them... to see that we are not trying hard to be Cadet Counselors, but that we are Cadet Counselors and now are invited to a lifetime of training to become the unique Cadet Counselor God has created us to be! Hope to see you all there!
